The invention relates to a modification in the technique for stuffing bristle tufts into toothbrushes, as a result of which such a compact stuffing is possible that the bristle tufts are in contact, without intermediate plastic bridges, a) in a row (see Fig. 1), b) in the form of a circle (Fig. 4), c) and within the entire brush area (Fig. 3). Owing to the arrangement selected in Fig. 1 and Fig. 4, a specific cleaning direction can be rendered harder or easier when using toothbrushes in that the tufts are more difficult to deflect in the direction in which they are in contact than in the region in which they can vibrate in a contact-free manner. The U-shaped bristles are no longer fixed by small retention plates, but by retention grids. <IMAGE>
