PURPOSE:To quickly obtain a display output image having a proper variable density level by connecting both maximum and minimum detecting parts to an image input device interface with a look-up table connected to a frame memory respectively. CONSTITUTION:A processor 11 detects the maximum and minimum values of the relative densities obtained by a maximum value detecting part 3 and a minimum value detecting part 4 with respect to the picture data read by a picture input device 1. These maximum and minimum values are outputted from a frame memory 5 and inputted to a look-up table 6 to be outputted as the maximum and minimum values of the digital data after conversion. Furthermore, the memory contents of the table 6 are set by the processor 11 so that the ratio between the difference from the maximum value and that from the minimum value obtained before conversion has no change even after conversion with respect to another intermediate value. Thus it is possible to display immediately the image a data stored in the memory 5 on a display 8 in a wide range of density and also as an image that corresponds faithfully to an original image in terms of density.
