PURPOSE:To prevent a tong and a coil from colliding with each other, by detecting width of the coil being conveyed on the ground and dislocation to a cross direction of the conveying direction of the coil, transmitting the information to a coil transfer machine, and thereby controlling this machine. CONSTITUTION:A coil 12 is conveyed in an arrow direction on a ground coil conveyor 10. Width of the coil 12 is detected by a coil detector 18, and offset in a conveying direction is detected by a coil offset detector 20, inputting it into a computing element 38. A fact that the coil 12 comes to a spot just under a coil transfer machine 16 is detected by a coil detector 19, inputting it into the computing element 38. With output of this computing element 38, a tong 14 is made to go down while adjusting the extent of each opening of two tongs 14 of the coil transfer machine 16 via control device 33, and the tong 14 is inserted into an opening 13 of the coil 12. Next, the tong 14 is closed and the coil 12 is made to go up. With this constitution, the tong and the coil are prevented from colliding with each other, thus operation efficiency is improvable.
