For efficient utilization of the capacity of a freezing tunnel it is desirable that the items for freezing 4 be introduced in close proximity but not so close, however, that they cannot be effectively frozen. It is usual for the items 4 to be delivered on a continuously moving belt 2 from an operations unit, in which they are deposited on the belt 2 at irregular intervals, and must be conveyed to a delivery belt 12, from whence after each row filling of this belt they are pushed off sideways in a row onto carrying trays on an underlying, transverse tunnel conveyor 14. According to the invention, the items are brought from the feeder belt 2 via a collecting belt 6 and an acceleration belt 8 to the delivery belt 12, and these belts are controlled in such a way that they produce spacings between the items, which due to the stopping of the belts during successive transfers from the delivery belt 12 are brought very close together, and that, by separate starting/stopping of the delivery belt 12 or both the acceleration belt and the delivery belt as a function of a detected excess distance between successive items, they produce separated items with a small interval between them. The items are fed without any significant queue pressure being built up underway. <IMAGE>
