The invention relates to a roof rack, especially for cars, having a profiled transverse support, which is supported on the vehicle roof by means of supporting feet at both ends and is fastened by means of releasable mounts, and has a slide way which extends in the longitudinal direction of the support, is open at the top and is intended to accommodate inserted load-holding devices, the roof rack of the said design having covers in front of the insertion apertures of the slideway. In known supports, covering the slideway is a time consuming process, which is not very user-friendly, especially during inclement weather. According to the invention, a cover which is simple and easy to use is devised by making the cover take the form of a locking element which is fastened to the supporting foot and engages with a projecting end in front of the insertion aperture in a locking position, the end of the said locking element being movable against the resistance of a spring into a release position, in which the insertion aperture is exposed. The locking element can also be designed without difficulty to cover other apertures in the supporting feet.
