PURPOSE:To maintain excellent magnetic characteristics in a thin magnetic metallic film and to improve the corrosion resistance thereof by using Co and Ni as well as Hf for the magnetic layers formed on a nonmagnetic substrate, specifying the respective contents thereof to prescribed % and interposing an intermediate Cr layer of a prescribed thickness between the substrate and the magnetic layers. CONSTITUTION:Nonmagnetic plating layers 12, 12' consisting of Ni-P, Ni-W, etc. of the prescribed thickness are formed on the substrate 11 consisting of an Al alloy, etc., of the magnetic recording medium. Magnetic control layers 13, 13' of >=100Angstrom and <=5,000Angstrom are further formed on the substrate 11 formed with the plating layers 12, 12' and the magnetic layers 14, 14' are formed thereon. The magnetic layers 14, 14' are constituted mainly of Co and Ni as well as Hf. The content of Hf is specified to >=0.1at% and <=15at% relative to Co and Ni. The content of Ni is specified to >=10at% and <=60at% relative to Co. The excellent magnetic characteristics are maintained in the thin magnetic metallic film and the corrosion resistance of the thin magnetic film is improved.
