[Also in Group XXXIV] A manually-operated feathering valve which controls the admission of pressure-fluid during starting to a line 150 feeding clutch and brake servos of a change-speed control system which, except for minor modifications, is identical with that described in Specification 866,326, has a dash-pot 202 for retarding the rate of movement of the valve spool 180 and hence the rate of increase of pressure fluid in the line 150. As shown with the valve spool moved manually to the right against a return-spring 234, the line 150 is exhausted at 186, and pressure-fluid supplied at 196 passes through a duct 226 to the dash-pot chamber 204. When the manual control is released the fluid trapped in the chamber 204 leaks slowly away past the valve land 178 to an exhaust port 238 and thus retards leftward movement of the valve spool 180. The valve spool 180 is tapered at 200 so that leftward movement of the spool gradually increases the communication between the pressure-fluid supply port 196 and the line 150. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 886,327.
