PURPOSE:To reduce the power consumption of a bar code reader by blinking a light emitting part in an ordinary working mode and at the same time checking whether or not the bar code reader has a contact with a subject by the reflected light to turning on the light emitting part continuously to read the bar code if a contact is confirmed between the bar code reader and the subject. CONSTITUTION:When a bar code is read, a light emitting part 1 is turned on and then the reflected light is checked at a detecting part 2 after a fixed period of time. If no reflected light is detected, i.e., a bar code reader has no contact with a subject, the part 1 is turned off and then turned on again after a fixed period of time. Such blinking actions are repeated until the bar code reader has a contact with the subject. If the reflected light is detected, the part 2 checks continuously the reflected light and reads the bar code with the reflected light corresponding to the bar code pattern. Then the part 1 is turned of when the reading is through with the bar code.
