An uneven load, for example an arc furnace, loads its supply network with severely fluctuating real loads and reactive loads and imbalances which vary rapidly and can contain varying harmonics. A compensator having an energy store which is connected in parallel with the load via a converter which can be pulsed at high frequency and is equipped, for example, with GTO thyristors and permits an optional energy interchange at any time in both directions between the energy store and each individual phase line makes it possible to compensate for these influences. In this case, each individual compensator phase current (iKx) is regulated to a required value via a two-point controller, which required value is produced from the difference between a mains current (iRsoll) corresponding to the mains in the compensated state and the load current (iVx) consumed by the load. <IMAGE>
