PURPOSE:To set a processing area to a closed area of an optional shape, and also, to edit image information at a high seed by referring to an area to be processed and deciding whether image information is a picture element to be processed or not, at the time of editing the image information. CONSTITUTION:Image information from an image input part 2 is inputted to an image information memory 73 by a picture element unit, and this picture element data is displayed on an image display part 14 through a display control part 72. When an image editing object area is designated by a pointing device 5, it is analyzed by a control part 74, and this information is written by a picture element unit in an area designating memory 10 of a processing object area setting part 71. Also, a signal is sent to a cursor generating part 13, and on a picture of the display part 14, a cursor for designating a processing object area is generated. When an image editing is instructed by a keyboard 4, the processing object area which is stored in the memory 10 by the control part 72 is referred to, by an area designating information display permitting signal 75 from the control part 74, the processing object area and the designated picture element are brought to negative/positive inversion and displayed on the display part 14, and the image editing of an optional shape can be executed by a processing of once.
