<p>PURPOSE:To manufacture fuel cells of high power and a long service life by stacking a plurality of unit cell in layers via gas separator plates after applying external power supply thereon in such a manner as polarizing the potential on one electrode of an unit cell in noble or mean direction or polarizing it alternately in noble and mean direction. CONSTITUTION:In an unit cell, are placed electrodes 3, 3 provided with ribs and flow passages 4, formed on their back faces, through which liquid fuel and liquid oxidant flow,, while sandwiching a matrix 1 impregnated with phosphoric acid solution serving as electrolyte. And electric energy is output from an unit cell in which fuel and oxidant flow through passages 4. If an external power supply is applied in such a manner as polarizing the potential on at least one side electrode of the unit cell in noble or mean direction or polarizing alternately in noble and mean direction, electric balance is broken in phosphoric acid solution in the vicinity of this electrode to attract reversely charged ions and water molecules. As the result, water molecules and phosphoric acid make contact with catalyzer to generate electric energy. These unit cells are stacked up in several layers via separator plates to get it operated as a fuel cell.</p> |
