PURPOSE:To manufacture a powder metallurgical processed stainless steel having improved physical characteristics such as improved elongation and impact value by using an inert gas or a gaseous mixture of gaseous nitrogen with an inert gas during forced cooling after sintering in vacuum. CONSTITUTION:A green compact of stainless steel powder is sintered in vacuum and forced to be cooled with an inert gas such as Ar or a gaseous mixture of gaseous nitrogen with an inert gas as a cooling medium. The composition of the gaseous mixture may be composed of about 33-67% N2 and about 67-33% Ar. By this method, the impact value and elongation of the powder metallurgical processed stainless steel are considerably improved, so the range in which the steel is applicable can be extended.
