PURPOSE:To manufacture an optical multiplexer and demultiplexer which has good characteristics with good reproducibility and controllability by bundling plural optical fibers so that at least welded parts contact one another, giving discharge heat to the welded parts of those optical fibers lengthwise and also applying tensile force, and welding and drawing the welded parts. CONSTITUTION:The plural optical fibers 12a and 12b are bundled and clamped and their welded parts are positioned at the opposite parts of discharge electrodes 6a and 6b-8a and 8b in contact with each other. A light source 10 is connected to one end of one optional fiber, e.g. 12a, photodetectors 11a and 11b are connected to the other-end sides of both optical fibers 12a and 12b, and light pulses are transmitted by the light source 10 to the photodetectors 11a and 11b. Then, a voltage is impressed to the discharge electrodes 6a and 6b-8a and 8b, and then the welded parts of the optical fibers 12a and 12b are heated and softened. The welded parts of the optical fibers 12a and 12a are heated and softened a certain time after the start of discharging, and both drawing tables 2a and 2b begin to move away from each other at the point of time as shown by arrows, and consequently the welded parts of the optical fibers 12a and 12a are not only welded thermally, but also drawn by receiving tensile forces from the drawing tables 2a and 2b.
