PURPOSE:To easily perform a position alignment between an input fingerprint and a registered fingerprint, by extracting the directional data of the swollen line of a fingerprint by every small area, and detecting a position dislocation between the input fingerprint and the registered fingerprint, based on the directional data. CONSTITUTION:In the registration time of the fingerprint, the directional data of the swollen line of the fingerprint by every small area is extracted from the fingerprint to be registered from an input device 1, by a directional data extracting device 4. The directional data is stored on a memory 2. Meanwhile, in the checking time of the fingerprint with the input fingerprint, the directional data of the input fingerprint is extracted by a detector 4, and it is compared with the directional data of the registered fingerprint, thereby the position dislocation between the input fingerprint and the registered fingerprint can be detected automatically. Based on the above, the position alignment between the input fingerprint and the registered fingerprint is performed, and feature data of both fingerprints can be compared and checked. Thus, the position alignment between the input fingerprint and the registered fingerprint can be easily performed.
