PURPOSE:To improve the utilizing efficiency of a sound recording tape, by performing the rewinding operation of the sound recording tape, using a signal outputted from a nonaudio detecting means, and the signal outputted from an exchange signal detecting means. CONSTITUTION:In the arriving time of an incoming from a caller, an automatic answering telephone set sends out a response message, and after the completion of a sending, a sound recording state is generated by a sound recording tape travelling part 9, then the message from the caller is recorded. When the message from the caller runs out, and a nonaudio state is generated, the fact is detected by a nonaudio detecting part 4. And when a nonaudio continuing time arrives at a set value, the sound recording tape travelling part 9 stops a sound recording operation, then starts the rewinding operation of the sound recording tape. And after a regulated time, the rewinding operation of the sound recording tape is terminated, and also, the sound recording tape is returned again to a sound recording waiting state, keeping the tape in a stop state. In this way, the utilizing efficiency of the sound recording tape can be improved.
