The invention consists in that a set of two pulleys is mounted, on a drive shaft and on a driven shaft, fixedly on the first and idly on the second. The reduction ratios of the pulleys between the drive shaft and the driven shaft are different. The two idle pulleys rotate at different speeds. A claw coupling device makes it possible to secure one of the two idle pulleys to the driven shaft, which thus rotates with the speed of the pulley. If a set of two pulleys is replaced by a gear pair, reverse running is obtained. The device is advantageous in cases where a very silent transmission is desired (submarine), or in the case of small cars in which the 50 cc motors on the market do not comprise a reverse gear. <IMAGE>
