In a cooking unit (1), a support (4) under tension is fixed to the underside of the hotplate (cooking plate) (3) in the edge region, directly adjacent to the outer periphery (8) of a radiant heating element (2). The support (4) engages under a cover (13), provided as base plate, of the insulation of the radiant heating element (2) in the region of an offset edge strip (16), at least one spring (22) being arranged between said edge strip (16) and the leg (19) engaging under it, which spring presses the insulating body (6) against the underside of the hotplate (3). As a result, a self-contained subassembly, optionally having a carrying rim (5), for mounting in a hob or the like is provided, in which the radiant heating element (2) is pressed against the hotplate (3) in a manner already prestressed. <IMAGE>
