PURPOSE:To attain miniaturization and to provide both functions of a rotary encoder and a tacho-generator, by connecting a rotary shaft to the rotary part of a machine tool or robot being an article to be detected. CONSTITUTION:A rotary shaft 4 having a rotor 11 is provided to the bearing parts at both ends of a case 1 in a freely rotatable manner. A stator 14 consisting of a coil 12 and a core 13 is arranged to the inner surface of the case 1 and a tacho-generator part 20 is constituted of the rotor 11 and the stator 14. A light emitter 7 such as LED or a lamp is provided to the under surface of a printed circuit board 8 in a state coinciding with a rotary slit and a rotary encoder 21 is constituted of a rotary disc 3, a fixed slit 5, a light receiver 6 and the light emitter 7. When the rotary shaft 4 is mounted to a machine tool or a robot so as to be connected to the rotary part thereof, the rotor 11 of the generator 20 and the disc 3 of the encoder 21 simultaneously rotate and the number of rotations are detected from the stator 14 and the angle of rotation of the rotary shaft can be detected from the encoder 21.
