PURPOSE:To enable twofold continuous printing and to make it possible to issue printing output within a half time, by providing a drive mechanism for shifting a ribbon cassette by the width of one ink ribbon after the data corresponding to one line is printed to interrupt printing operation and restarting printing while the other ink ribbon is fed to enable printing in both directions. CONSTITUTION:A carrier frame 1 is moved along a printing line while a printing head 4 holds an ink ribbon 9 between said head 4 and printing paper to perform printing. At the same time, a ribbon motor 7 feeds the ink ribbon 9 so that a new ink coating surface is always adjacent to printing paper. When printing operation advances and the printing of one line is finished, a finish signal is emitted to stop printing operation and a holder 5 is pushed down by exciting a solenoid 2. The ink ribbon 9 is brought to such a state that the lateral upper side part (that is, the reverse direction printing part) thereof can be adjacent to the printing head 4 and the ribbon motor 7 is also set along with an upper side gear to be reversed and restarts printing operation while feeds the ink ribbon 9.
