PURPOSE:To permit a member to be treated to be stretched satisfactorily, by rotatingly providing elastic cylindrical bodies so that they make contact each other with a pair of fixed shafts having a prescribed degree of curvature in a expander roller for removing wrinkles of a paper sheet and the like in travel. CONSTITUTION:An expander roller 30 comprises a pair of rollers 35 each including a fixed shaft 31 with a prescribed degree of curvature having a circumference provided with an elastic cylindrical body 32 composed of rubber and the like mounted thereto through a bearing and the like, the elastic cylindrical body 32 having a curved portion 33 of which inside has an overlaid portion 34 overlaid within the range of its maximum curvature. The roller 35 thus constructed applies an expanding or contracting action in a direction normal to the axial direction of the roller to a member to be treated such as a paper sheet and the like inserted through the inside of the curved portion 33 over the entire circumference of the roller. With such an arrangement, stretching of the member to be treated, a simple pinch, contraction and automatic aligning as well as a forcible drive of the member to be treated are possible,whereby the member to be treated is prevented from being distorted and cut and a sufficient stretching effect can be obtained.
