PURPOSE:To obtain an austenitic alloy superior in stress corrosion cracking resistance to the austenitic stainless steel hitherto frequently used, by providing a ferrous alloy containing each prescribed amount of Cr, Ni, Mo, Mn, N, C, Si, P, and S. CONSTITUTION:The austenitic alloy excellent in stress corrosion cracking resistance has a composition consisting of, by weight, 18-35% Cr, 25-50% Ni, <=8% Mo, <=6% Mn, <=0.5% N, <=0.03% C, <=0.2% Si, <=0.015% P, <=0.005% S, and the balance Fe with impurities. This alloy is excellent in corrosion resistance and strength, and particularly in resistance to stress corrosion cracking. Therefore, said alloy is suitable as material for parts used under a severe corrosive environment in a stress-applied condition, for example, parts such as bolts, clamps, etc.
