In contrast to the customary electric toothbrushes having a brush head vibrating about the longitudinal axis, the invention provides a brush head which rotates continuously about the longitudinal axis and whose direction of rotation can in each case be adjusted by means of a switch in such a way that brushing is effected in a direction away from the gums. In a spiral arrangement of the bristles of the brush head, the vertical and horizontal conveyance is additionally accompanied by a sagittal conveyance of the dirt particles.
