PURPOSE:To adjust tracking at high accuracy by simple work by operating an adjusting tool so as to move and adjust a carriage for adjusting tracking. CONSTITUTION:When a belt carriage fixed screw 27 is loosened, the carriage 13 becomes freely movable irrespective of the rotating force of a stepping motor 10. Tracking adjustment work for a magnetic head starts. An operator operates the adjusting tool 23 so as to insert an adjusting hole 25 for a rotating gear 24 into an adjusting boss 21. In that state the rotating gear 24 of the adjusting tool 23 is set so that it can engage with a linear gear 20 formed on a steel belt 12. In such a state, when the operator operates the grip part 26 of the adjusting tool 23 to rotate the rotating gear 24, the carriage 13 moves linearly in accordance with the rotating direction. Thus the rotating amount of the rotating gear 24 is adjusted, whereby the moving amount of the carriage 13 in the horizontal direction can be adjusted.
