PURPOSE:To improve exhaust emission control performance without spoiling the operability of an engine by selecting and operating one of the 1st and the 2nd sensors according to the operation state of the engine. CONSTITUTION:The 1st sensor is formed by providing two 1st electrode couples 11a and 11b, and 12a and 12b on the internal and external wall surfaces of the electrolyte wall part 1 of the 1st gas reservation chamber 2 communicating with an exhaust pipe through the 1st gas diffusion limiting means such as an intake hole 4 opposite each other across the internal and external wall surfaces. Further, the 2nd sensor is constituted by providing two 2nd electrode couples 13a and 13b, and 14a and 14b on the internal and external wall surfaces of the electrolyte wall part 1 of the 2nd gas reservation chamber 3 communicating with the 1st gas reservation part 2 through the 2nd gas diffusion limiting means such as a communicating hole 5 opposite each other across those internal and external wall surfaces. Then, a current from a current supply circuit is supplied selectively to between either of one electrode couple 11a and 11b and 11b of the 1st sensor and one electrode couple 13a and 13b of the 2nd sensor according to the operation state of the engine and an oxygen concentration detected value corresponding to the fed current value is outputted.
