PURPOSE:To efficiently and directly obtain butanol from cellulose in a short time, by cultivating a cellulolytic transformant strain of specific Clostridium thermosaccharolyticum in a cellulose-containing culture medium. CONSTITUTION:For example, chromosomic DNA separated from an anaerobic thermophilic microorganism, e.g. Clostridium thermocellum C-27 strain (FERM-P No. 7451), etc., which is a cellulolytic microorganism is used to transform Clostridium thermosaccharolyticum and the titled aimed transformant strain is selected and obtained from the resultant transformant strain. Individual cellulose or cellulose, e.g. wood, waste paper, etc., is then added to a culture medium containing a nitrogen source, inorganic salt, etc., to give 1-20wt% concentration and the transformant strain is cultivated at 45-65 deg.C and 6-8 pH under anaerobic condition for 1-15 days to form butanol. After completing the cultivation, the butanol is collected from the culture. |
