PURPOSE:To ensure a stroke required for a radial movement before start by providing a conversion mechanism converting the movement of a stopper in a direction meshing with a lock gear into the turning of the lock gear so as to displace a magnetic head to the inner circumference of a magnetic disk. CONSTITUTION:When a stepping motor rotary shaft 11A is driven clockwise, the magnetic head is moved outward in the radial direction and reaches a position corresponding to the outermost peripheral track, a projection 28 of a lock gear 18 is abutted with a regulation rod 30 to regulate the torque. As soon as the motor is deenergized at this position, the power application to an actuator 24 is interrupted, a stopper 27 is turned counterclockwise by the operation of a compression spring 29, the tip of the stopper 27 depresses the tilted face 31 of the projection 28 to drive the lock gear 18 counterclockwise. After the magnetic head is moved slightly toward the inner side from a position reading the outomost peripheral track, the stopper 27 and the lock gear 18 mesh with each other to lock the magnetic head.
