PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as an intermdediate for various organic chemicals, on an industrial scale, by using inexpensive alkyl halide or benzyl halide as a raw material and reacting either of the material with glyoxal, formaldehyde and ammonia. CONSTITUTION:A 1-substituted-imidazole (e.g. 1-allylimidazole, 1-benzyl- imidazole, etc.) can be produced by using an allyl halide such as allyl chloride, allyl bromide, etc., or a benzyl halide such as benzyl chloride, benzyl bromide, etc., as a raw material and reacting either one of the the raw material with glyoxal, formaldehyde and ammonia.
