To pretreat aluminium and aluminium alloys, i.e. to purify and activate the surface, the latter is treated with alkali solutions and subsequently subjected to active cleaning, preferably with ultrasound in a slightly alkaline solution. In the event of coarse contamination, an aftercleaning can be carried out in a mixture of an aqueous acid (hydrochloric acid, phosphoric acid, fluorine compounds, surfactants and inhibitors). Such a method involving aluminium components to be electroplated or chromatised can be automatically controlled, and a reject level of up to 10% in the case of complicated aluminium components can be maintained. <IMAGE>
