PURPOSE:To produce a high-calory gas similar to a natural gas from coke oven gas, by feeding particular coal into a coke oven, effecting dry distillation to obtain a raw gas and reacting the raw gas in the presence of a catalyst. CONSTITUTION:Coal having an oxygen content of 6.2-8.0wt% on the moisture- ash-free basis is fed into a coke oven to carry out dry distrillation of the coal, thereby obtaining a coke oven gas having a decreased value of volume ratio of hydrogen to carbon oxides. The coke oven gas or a mixture of the gas with a carbon oxides as a starting material is reacted in the presence of a catalyst to form hydrocarbons, thereby obtaining a high-calory gas as desired. The volume ratio of hydrogen to carbon oxides in the starting material gas selected from among the coke oven gas and the mixture of the gas with carbon oxides may be varied according to need. It is generally preferred, however, that the ratio be 7 or less in the case of a general fuel and from 2-4 in the case of a city gas.
