PURPOSE:To reduce the number of arrangement elements to be compared and to make high speed processing possible by selecting reference data for detection and making judgement calculating stored picture image data by the reference data and an image storing means. CONSTITUTION:Picture element data changed to numerical values inputted from an image input device 1 are stored in an image memory 2, and data arrangement of areas of 9 picture elements, at every longitudinal and lateral 3 picture elements, from an image memory corresponding to upper left end of a display picture, and EX-OR is made with already stored 11 reference mark 1 and all arranged elements are added. Then, it is judged whether the result is less than 1 or not. When it is less than 1, similar processing is made on 12 reference mark 2, and when it is not, similar processing is made from a picture element adjoining to the right of selected picture element arrangement. Similar processing is made on up to 13 reference mark 3. Picture arrangement element for which the result of addition became less than 1 is a detection mark, and thus, the mark can be detected.
