PURPOSE:To accomplish the titled purification by bringing a polyarylene sulfide resin containing salts into contact with polyvinyl alcohol in a polar solvent at temperatures higher than a specified level to drastically reduce the slat content in said resin. CONSTITUTION:A salt-contg. polyarylene sulfide resin (polyphenylene sulfide resin) is brought into contact with polyvinyl alcohol (with a polymerization degree 200-2,000) in a polar solvent (pref. N-methylpyrrolidone) at >=150 deg.C, thus accomplishing the objective purification. The weight ratio of the polyarylene sulfide resin to the polyvinyl alcohol is 1-100 (pref. 2-10).
