PURPOSE:To easily release the titled assembly from a metallic mold when the assembly is formed by forging, by forming the outer peripheral surface of a rotary cylinder to have a tapered shape, in which the side end for fitting a recording and reproducing heads facing a fixed cylinder is made smaller in diameter and the opposite side end is made larger in diameter. CONSTITUTION:The outer peripheral surface of this rotary head assembly is formed to have tapered shape, in which the side end 201 for fitting a recording and reproducing heads is made smaller in diameter and the opposite side end is made larger in diameter, with the taper angle being alpha deg.. This taper exerts a force in the direction shown by the arrow 10 against a tape-like recording medium 6 while running on the outer peripheral surface of a rotating rotary cylinder 2A and the force stops the vertical movement of the running recording medium 6 produced when the medium 6 is shifted in the axial direction of the rotary cylinder 2A from a leading groove 5. Accordingly, when the rotary cylinder 2A is released from a metallic mold in the direction shown by the arrow 11, the cylinder 2A can easily be released from the metallic mold and, therefore, the rotary cylinder 2A having prescribed accuracy can be mass-produced inexpensively in a short time.
