The subject of the invention is an internal combustion engine which, for a justifiable construction cost and without excessively increasing the overall size of the engine, allows the expansion to be prolonged beyond the swept volume. Prerequisites for this are - operation on the four-stroke principle - an even number of cylinders - the cycle of each two cylinders is shifted out of phase by precisely two strokes. The prolonged expansion is achieved in that the underside of the cylinders is closed towards the crankcase, as is the case, for example, in engines with crosshead and pushrod. During the exhaust stroke, the combustion gases from each cylinder are led to the underside of the piston and of a further piston, moving synchronously upwards, which is just performing a compression stroke. As soon as the two pistons have reached the top dead centre, the expansion is completed. The combustion gases are exhausted from the two cylinder chambers by the downwards movement of the pistons.
