This invention relates to a method for the production of iron from iron ore of the kind in which the ore is reduced in an ore-reduction vessel with the aid of a reaction gas from a smelting vessel, the reduced iron ore then being fed into the smelting vessel and smelted down under the addition of carbon-containing fuels and oxygencontaining gases. In accordance with the present invention the reaction gas which arises in the smelting vessel is subjected therein to a partial post-combustion. The heat generated from this partial post-combustion is largely transmitted to the melt in the smelting vessel and the reaction gas passing into the ore-reduction vessel is cooled and reduced by means of reducing agents.
