PRODUCTION OF PHENANTHRENE 9-SULFONIC ACID

PURPOSE:To obtain a phenanthrene 9-sulfonic acid salt from phenanthrene and concentrated sulfuric acid in high selectivity, by sulfonating the above raw material at a specific temperature using a specific amount of concentrated sulfuric acid. CONSTITUTION:100pts.wt. of phenanthrene is sulfonated with 60-200pts.wt., preferably 100-150pts.wt. of concentrated sulfuric acid at 70-100 deg.C, preferably 75-85 deg.C to obtain phenanthrene 9-sulfonic acid within a short reaction time (preferably in 5-12hr). The objective compound can be produced in high selectivity in a state free from hardly separable unreacted raw material or a side reaction product such as phenanthrene 2-(or 3-)sulfonic acid, etc.
