The invention relates to a process and an apparatus for connecting two gas pipelines at their axially aligned end portions (70, 72), without a large amount of gas escaping into the atmosphere, by means of a tubular connecting piece which can be pushed coaxially over the end portions (70, 72), one of the gas pipelines already containing gas before the connection and having a closed end which can be cut off by means of a saw (90). The apparatus comprises an air-lock casing (1) which can be assembled in a gas-tight manner from two parts (2, 3), has two opposite openings (6, 7), in its outer wall (4, 5), and exhibits at least two air-lock chambers (8, 9) which are separated from one another by an inner wall (11) and can be connected to one another through an opening (13) which is located in the inner wall (11), is arranged between the outer-wall openings (6, 7) and can be closed in a gas-tight manner by an air-tight cover (15) arranged, such that it can be moved from outside, in an air-lock chamber (8, 9). In the outer wall of the air-lock casing (1) there is a provided a further opening (80) which borders on one air-locked chamber (9). In one outer-wall opening (6), the end portion (70) of one gas pipeline can be displaced in a gas-tight manner, and the connecting piece (71) can be fixed in a gas-tight manner in the other outer-wall opening (7).
