A method for detoxifying a storage site for hazardous waste material, at which site the hazardous waste material is distributed at random, without contaminating the surrounding atmosphere, comprises the following steps: a casing delimiting an enclosed space is brought to a first station at the waste site; a zone A of stirred particulate waste is formed below the casing X; the zone A is heated to convert volatile toxic compounds to toxic vapours which flow upwards into the casing X together with free toxic gases; a toxic flow is led off from the casing X; toxic components are removed from the toxic flow and the air obtained is circulated back to the zone A; the type of toxic components remaining in zone A is determined; an oxidizing agent is introduced into zone A in order to render toxic metal salts essentially insoluble in water and tending to convert the remaining toxic organic components in zone A to volatile toxic waste; a dewatering agent is introduced into zone A to make the contents therein essentially impermeable to water; and the method is repeated at a second adjacent station. <IMAGE>
