Solid wastes, such as calcined radioactive wastes or spent nuclear fuel rods, are fixed in place in a container system comprising a metal cylindrical container (11) with bellows-like side walls. The method consists of the following steps: arranging the waste material in the container (11), inserting a corpuscular protective material (25) to form a dense, solid barrier around the waste material, sealing the container (11), heating the container (11), and applying pressure along the axis of the container, effecting a uniaxial compression of the container and forming the corpuscular protective material into a dense, solid matrix. The method is characterised by having at least part of the corpuscular protective material (25 or 27) in close contact with the waste material, and at least part of the corpuscular protective material (25 or 27) contain a metal powder that is retained and arranged around the waste material, to form a dense cladding of a corrosion-resistant metal, thereby fixing the waste material in place. <IMAGE> |
