A multi-cylinder reciprocating piston internal combustion engine 1 has a separate cylinder head 2, which is bolted to a cylinder housing 4 by means of bolts 13 with the insertion of a gasket 3. The cylinder housing 4 has a web 6 of relatively narrow bearing surface between closely adjacent cylinders 5. The preferably liquid-cooled cylinder head 2 has a coolant chamber defined by the cylinder head base 8 and a cover wall 9 arranged at a distance from this. In the area of the web 6 the cylinder head base 8 is connected by way of a support to the cover wall 9, the cover wall 9 having an elevation 11 on the other side. A relatively flexurally rigid bridge 12 is clamped in its end areas against the cylinder head 2 by the bolts 13 and impinges upon the elevation 11. The force resulting from the deflection or deformation of the bridge 12 acts by way of the elevation 11 and the support 10 on the cylinder head base 8 in the area of the web 6 in order to increase the pressure of the gasket 3 in this area. <IMAGE>
