A description is given of an apparatus for the production of metal powder by atomisation from a metal melt, the apparatus having a tank (10) which holds the melt (12) and has a nozzle (14), a cooling space (18), a separator (28) and a device (30) for producing an air flow through the cooling space (18) and through the separator (28). The bottom of the cooling space (18) is designed as a channel (34) which runs approximately horizontally in the spraying direction (A) of the nozzle (14). The channel (34) can be provided with a screen-like false bottom (36) which spans the channel on the side facing away from the cooling space (18) and can form what is referred to as a fluidised bed. <IMAGE>
