A reference electrode suitable for use in measuring electro- chemical potential in a pressurised and/or heated system has a sensing portion and means for supplying a reference electrolyte to the sensing portion. The sensing portion comprises an electrode (9) inside a containing means (8a), to which reference electrolyte can be supplied, and an ion permeable sensing member (8d) for contacting the reference electrolyte when in the containing means (8a). The ion permeable sensing member (8d) also has a portion (8b) for placing in a region the electrochemical potential of which is to be measured. Electrolyte is supplied to the containing means (8d) via tube (5) through which insulated (11) wire electrode (9) also passes. One embodiment of the invention provides a hydrogen reference electrode for use in high temperature aqueous environments. <IMAGE> |
