PURPOSE:To improve the color separation capacity where output information from color separating means is separated into plural color areas including achromatic colors and chromatic colors respectively, by providing an original illuminating means, an optical system including color separating means, and a photoelectric conversion means. CONSTITUTION:Optical information of a color original 34 projected with a light source 35 is made incident on an optical system 300 and is separated to a red component and a cyan component, and they are converted to electric signals through CCDs 41 and 42. These signals are converted to digital data by A/D converters 61 and 62 after being amplified to prescribed levels by amplifiers 51 and 52. These converted picture data are inputted to an arithmetic processing circuit 71, and the circuit 71 normalizes them into data VR and VC, and these picture data VR and VC are used to generate a color separation map, and color separation is performed. That is, a coordinate system having VR+VC and VR/(VR+VC) or VC/(VR+VC) as two coordinate axes is used to separate chromatic colors (red and cyan) and achromatic colors from each other distinctly, and the color separation capacity is improved.
