NEW MATERIAL:3-Hydroxyuridine. USE:Plant growth regulator or herbicide. PREPARATION:For example, dried stems of a plant, Baillonella toxisperma, are extracted with methanol for about 2 weeks, the extract is filtered and concentrated under reduced pressure. The resultant aqueous extract is extracted with ethyl acetate and the water-soluble fraction is subjected to silica-gel column chromatography and the column is eluted with a chloroform-methanol mixed solvent. The eluate with the 70% methanol solvent is subjected to granular charcoal column chromatography and the column is eluted with a water- methanol mixed solvent. The fraction eluted with the 70% methanol solvent is subjected to the dripping counter-current distribution method to effect partition using the lower layer of n-butanol-n-propanol-water (2:1:3) as the stationary phase and the upper layer as the mobile phase. Further, the collected active fraction is purified by the preparative high-performance liquid chromatography.
