PURPOSE:To increase the recognition accuracy of a character, so that the character can be recognized without segmenting the character, by providing an image storage means, a feature extracting means, a feature vector storage means, a conversion matrix value storage means, a linear coupling means, a conversion feature value storage means, a dictionary storage means, a distance calculating means, and a control means. CONSTITUTION:When a value of an image corresponding to each address value which has been outputted is outputted from an image storage means 1, a feature extracting means 4 multiplies its value and a weighted value of a weight mask by each corresponding one, and an added value of each multiplied value is set as a density feature value in one sampling position, and outputted to a density vector storage means 5. A distance calculating means 10 calculates a distance between a value being an output from a conversion feature value storage means 8, and a conversion feature value of each dictionary from a dictionary storage means 9, and outputs a value of the minimum distance and the corresponding category name. A result storage means 11 inputs a signal of a distance value outputted from the distance calculating means 10 and its category name, and outputs an end signal for showing a fact that storage of its input signal has been ended, to a control means 3.
