PURPOSE:To extract and advantageously recover pyridine and/or picoline in a substance containing a pyridine based base into a toluene and and/or xylene fraction, by adding a substance containing toluene and/or xylene to the substance containing the pyridine based base and distilling the resultant mixture. CONSTITUTION:A substance containing toluene and/or xylene, preferably crude light oil obtained by coal carbonization is added to a substance, containing a pyridine based base and prepared b preferably recovering from carbol oil or naphthalene oil and the resultant mixture is distilled to collect a toluene and/or xylene fraction by distillation. Thereby pyridine in the above-mentioned base is concentrated in the toluene fraction and picoline is concentrated in the xylene fraction in relative purified form. The pyridine or picoline or both are recovered from the fractions by a conventional method to remarkably improve the purification effect and obtain the pyridne and/or picoline slightly coloring with time readily and without and difference in cost depending on the content of the above-mentioned base.
