PURPOSE:A heat-resistant finishing oil is applied to a bundle of preoxidized filaments with a specific filament count to improve the bundling properties, then, the bundle is subjected to the primary heat treatment and roasted in high production efficiency, as being prevented from breakage. CONSTITUTION:Preoxidized filaments of 1,000-50,000 filament count is treated with a heat-resistant finishing oil into a bundle and subjected to the primary heat treatment by continuously passing the filament bundle through a continuous heat-treatment oven which has a temperature ingredient from lower than 400 deg.C at the start of the treatment up to the maximum lower than 1,800 deg.C and is filled with non-oxidative gas. Then, the bundle is passed through an oven which is kept at 3,000 deg.C or lower in an inert gas atmosphere to effect the secondary heat treatment, carbonization and graphitization to give pitch carbon filaments and graphite filaments of good appearance, high strength and elasticity.
