PURPOSE:To eliminate the adverse influence of an external magnetic field by providing a pad to the main magnetic pole surface of a vertical magnetic head surrounded with blocks having high magnetic permeability and an auxiliary magnetic pole surface arranged opposite respectively, and passing a recording medium between then and removing sticking matter from the recording medium. CONSTITUTION:The whole of the main magnetic pole 15 is surrounded with the shield block 16 made of a material with high magnetic permeability and a magnetic field produced by the main magnetic pole 15 and auxiliary magnetic pole 22 consist of two ellipses; and an external magnetic field 26 when applied as shown by an arrow X2 is split into right and left and exit from the bottom surface of the magnetic body block 23 to the air. The gap between the magnetic pole 22 and a main magnetic pole film 11 is extremely narrow and even if dust or wear particle sticks on the recording medium 4 passing through the gap, it is removed by pads 17, 18, 20 and 21. Thus, a fall in recording and reproduction level and a fall in recording level when a head slides on the magnetic medium are evaded effectively by shielding from the external magnetic field and the removal of recording medium sticking matter.
