PRODUCTION OF PURIFIED 2,2-DIETHYL-1,3-PROPANEDIOL

PURPOSE:To obtain the titled substance by reacting 2-ethylbutanal with formaldehyde in the presence of water and an alkali or alkaline earth metal hydroxide, neutralizing the reaction product with an acid, stirring the obtained organic layer in the presence of water and distilling the organic layer under reduced pressure. CONSTITUTION:The titled substance is synthesized by reacting 2-ethylbutanal with formaldehyde (preferably paraformaldehyde of 70-95wt% purity) in the presence of water and an alkali or alkaline earth metal hydroxide at 30-90 deg.C. The reaction mixture is neutralized with an organic acid or a mineral acid and left at rest to separate the mixture into an organic layer and a water layer. The organic layer is added with 0.01-2 times (preferably 0.05-1 times) water and stirred at 10-100 deg.C (preferably 50-70 deg.C) to effect the washing out and removal of formaldehyde and formic acid salt. The purified organic layer is distilled under reduced pressure to obtain the titled substance in purified state. USE:Raw material for synthetic resin.
