PURPOSE:To enable tab setting, modification or the like to be performed easily and speedily, by providing a means for disciminating the digit place of the first character on one line in each data block each time data are inputted, and a means for determining tab positions in the next line on the basis of the digit place information. CONSTITUTION:Data inputted through an input part 1 are sequentially stored into a line memory 3 in the order of their input, with one line as a unit, under the control of an input-controlling part 2. When a carriage return key provided at the input part 1 is operated, the input-controlling part 2 functions according to the key signal thus supplied. Namely, the part 2 once clears a tab memory 4, detects the position of the first character of each word in the data stored in the line memory 3, and writes a tab code (mark {254D/64}) into the tab memory 4 at a digit place corresponding to the detected position. Thereafter, the data stored in the line memory 3 are erased, and a cursor pointer X, Y is moved to the first tab position in the next line (Y Y+1, XY TAB). Thus, tab positions are automatically set based on the data just inputted sequentially with one line as a unit.
