PURPOSE:To obtain the title polymer useful as a heat-resistant polymer or a photoconductive polymer and free of coloration, by polymerizing N- allylcarbazole in an inert solvent in the presence of a specified catalyst. CONSTITUTION:A modified TiCl3 catalyst (a) is obtained by reducing TiCl4 with Al, H or an organoaluminum compound and copulverizing the product with an oxygen-containing compound such as an ether, ester, orthoester or alkoxysilicon. 1mol of N-allylcarbazole (A) is polymerized at room temperature to 100 deg.C for several min to several hundreds hr in an inert solvent such as an aliphatic, alicyclic, aromatic or the like hydrocarbon in the presence of a catalyst (B) comprising 0.001-0.1mol of a catalyst (a) and 0.001-0.1mol of an organoaluminum compound (b). After completion of the polymerization, the reaction mixture is poured into a poor solvent for the polymer, such as methanol, acetone or hexane, to separate the polymer. In this way, the title polymer is obtained.
